To be a great writer, your essay should contain the right language. You can make great points and ideas, but they are not well-articulated. Developing your writing skills is very important. This will require you to do a lot of practice. Yet, along the run, you will realize that practice is not enough. You have to use certain words, phrases and techniques to be able to write top-notch essays. These words and phrases make your writing eloquent and conversational.
In this short article, I will share with you some of these words and phrases.
1. To that end
Usage: Use “to that end” or “to this end” exactly as: “in order to” or “so”.
Example: Psycholinguists have long sought to understand how babies communicate with each other. To that end, a new study has been launched that looks at how babies develop speech perception.
2. Coupled with
Usage: Used when considering two or more arguments at a time.
Example: Coupled with the evidence I shared earlier, these statistics show how active the company was in the last four weeks.
3. Not to mention/to say nothing of
Usage: “Not to mention” and “to say nothing of” is used to add extra information with an emphasis.
Example: The second world war caused a terrible suffering to many people, not to mention its sideeffect on countries’ economy.
4. With this in mind
Usage: Use this words when considering a point in the knowledge of something else.
Example: We’ve seen that the methods used by teachers and educators in the last two decades were to the rear of our expectations which makes hard to achieve quality education. With this in mind, let’s look at a more recent methods to see how the results compare.
5. Provided that
Usage: This means “on the condition that”. If one condition is fulfilled, then, it is possible to do something.
Example: Provided that we have enough time today, we will sieze this opportunity to visit your very tired uncle.
6. In view of/in light of
Usage: You can use these phrases when you have shed light on something else.
Example: In light of the documents I have, I can say that it should not have happened that way.
Usage: This is just another way of saying “nonetheless”.
Example: Notwithstanding the research methods used, it is considered one the most important studies in linguistics.
Usage: This word can be used to mean “significantly” and sometimes, it can also be used interchangeably with “in particular”.
Example: New teachers are notably doing a great job.
9. All things considered
Usage: This means “taking everything into consideration”.
Example: All things considered, it is fair to assume that there should be more intervention from the part of government to improve the quality of education…
This is not a comprehensive list of words. Yet, this can be a starting point. By learning these words and phrases, you can enlarge your lexical repertoire and develop your writing skills.
