How to use possessive pronouns in English

What are possessive pronouns?

Possessive pronouns are used to show that something belongs to someone. We have two types of possessive pronouns: subject and object pronouns.

Examples of Subject possessive pronouns:

  • My book
  • Your bike
  • His car
  • Her food
  • Its color
  • Our family
  • Your city
  • Their house

Examples of Object possessive pronouns:

  • This book is mine.
  • This bike is yours.
  • That car is his.
  • That food is hers.
  • This house is ours.
  • This garden is yours.
  • That car is theirs.

More examples:  

A: Is that Bob’s phone?

B: Yes, it is his

 

A: Is this his car?

B: No, this is mine.

 

A: Are these your keys?

B: No, they are not mine.

 

A: Is that your copybook?

B: No, it is hers.
